By the time Shanadi started his freshman year at the University of Florida, he had nearly a decade of work under his belt. His first brand, Greek House, while "a little bit of an accident," admitted Shanadi, was set in motion. It allowed him and McGurrin to launch Greek House with the limited savings they had. They dedicated weeknights and weekends to growing Greek House. Quitting corporate America, living on $1,000 a month, and learning from a $33,000 mistakeIn 2016, Shanadi quit his job to go all-in on Greek House.

But what if I told you this group shrunk its share count dramatically since 2019? The numbers tell the story: Lennar now has 276 million shares outstanding, down from 318 million five years ago. Other than Toll, most of the homebuilder management teams do not emphasize this fundamental change in share count. Management has been buying hand over fist since 2019, shrinking the share count to 215 million from 264 million. My rather unassailable conclusion is pretty simple: Check the share count before you buy a stock.

Dick's Sporting Goods raised its dividend by 10% on Thursday as the company posted its largest sales quarter in its history and projected another year of growth. Many retailers benefited from a 53rd week in fiscal 2023, but Dick's said it still broke records during its fiscal fourth quarter even without those extra days. "With our industry-leading assortment and strong execution, we capped off the year with an incredibly strong fourth quarter and holiday season," CEO Lauren Hobart said in a statement. Following the strong quarter, Dick's raised its quarterly dividend 10% to $1.10 per share. "We compete with everyone in the world during the fourth quarter, and also the consumer is going through an awful lot, and we're just trying to be cautious."

The US just experienced the warmest "meteorological winter" on record, NOAA said last week. It also led to unpredictable consumer demand, causing headaches for retailers and other businesses. For Dick's, warmer weather means that sales skew toward lightweight fleeces rather than pricier down parkas, she said. A retailer in South Dakota surveyed by the Federal Reserve said that even though the warmer weather led to higher foot traffic, sales of winter gear and equipment fell. Following the Foot Locker debacle earlier this week, there could be more turmoil in the retailer space. Because publicly traded companies provide quarterly financial reports, historic revenue growth and earnings multiples are available to everyone. Earlier this week, I wrote that Foot Locker 's outperformance relative to Nike was hard to comprehend. Dick's did not fall in sympathy with Foot Locker as Academy did, and admittedly Dick's is a very different business than Foot Locker. Observe that their revenues have more than tripled over the past 10 years even as Foot Locker has languished: That said, broader economic trends, while they may not affect all businesses equally, still matter.

Walmart quietly reduced its store count in 2023 even though the company was doing really well. In addition to closing underperforming stores, the retailer sold at least 79 small-format locations. Given what Walmart has planned for the next few years, the move away from smaller locations makes sense. "Walmart has always struggled with smaller stores," Saunders said. In addition to new stores, many existing locations are being upgraded to Walmart's "store of the future" concept, including 650 projects this year.

Despite the seeming rush to shop, this Black Friday ushered in moderately higher promotions over last year and mixed in-store traffic, according to some Wall Street analysts. Black Friday winners Value-focused shopping destinations seemed to win big Friday, based on annual store checks from a slew of Wall Street shops. The Black Friday shopping extravaganza also ushered in some bullish sentiment toward Shopify . Black Friday losers Not every popular retailer seemed to kick off the holiday shopping period on a strong note.
